Swiss voters will have the final say on whether alternative medicine should be covered by the Basic Health Insurance scheme.
The government decided more than three months ago to cut five types of therapy from basic cover as it battles to reduce spiralling health costs. Backers of complementary medicine have collected 140,000 signatures in just under a year to force a nationwide vote. They had until next March to gather the required 100,000 signatures. Their aim is to ensure that practitioners of alternative medicine are recognised and guarantee that all costs associated with these types of treatment are reimbursed under compulsory health insurance. | | |

A la fin de l'année, les caisses maladie auront 7,5 milliards de francs de réserves et de provisions. Cette fortune pose problème au moment d'augmenter les primes pour 2006.

Drugs: lower prices and new system of examination of the prices. Drug prices should fall by the next middle year. Federal Office of Public Health ( OFSP) agreed with the pharmaceutical industry of a batch of measures which has to allow to save at least 250 million Swiss francs. The huge differences in price with regard to foreign countries will so be got rid of, OFSP said on Tuesday in a communiqué.
Those measures concern as much original preparations as generic. The second will have to cost at least 30 % less than original medicines at the time of their introduction on the market. Their prices will have to fall with 15 % more at the end of the next 24 months. One year after their application, the measures will be analyzed, clarifies the OFSP. The results will be verified by an external and neutral organ.
